New Pieces and Winnsboro Art Fair…..How did it go?

Hi!!

Well we just returned from Winnsboro Fine Arts Festival where the artists were treated like kings and queens.  The sales weren’t the best but the atmosphere and hospitality couldn’t be beat!  We sold two pieces and had two galleries ask for pieces to be hung in their spaces with commissions but we have another show in two weeks and just didn’t have the inventory but it was quite the compliment!  I did a demo for the show which you can see below.  I’ve gotten so used to working in large spaces that working on a small canvas just about killed me so I had to carry it over to another canvas and now I’m on the third…so a simple demo turned into a series…..I’m never simple I guess.

I’ve also completed a new piece that I was able to show that really caught one of the judges eyes.  He said he loved it and it was his favorite….and yet I didn’t win any awards….I guess he was out-voted! 🙂  But I’m very happy with the piece and the new direction my work is taking with some new techniques I’ve found from extensive reading.  It’s really changing the way I work and I’m loving it.  I hope you do too.

New Work

New work

Well, the last pic is our booth and I hope this post has made you feel like you were there with us in Winnsboro even if you couldn’t make it to see us.  I hope to see you soon, we’re at the Peddler’s show in Arlington at the Arlington Convention Center November 18-20.  Hope to see you there!!

As always, Peace and Light, don’t forget to comment or contact me, tweet or facebook.  I would love to hear from you!

First Outdoor Art Show

Well our first outdoor show and it was a great experience overall….the 50,000 crowd they promised was more like 5000 and I only sold three prints, but the guy next to me said he’s been doing this 25 years and it just wasn’t a good show.  He only sold one hand bag and a dress (to me!!)  All the artists were AMAZING, the setup was intense but the day was lovely and my husband and I truly enjoyed ourselves and thought….we could do this for the rest of our lives…but the end of the evening came with the first rain TX has seen in MONTHS leaving us rapidly pulling down the tent and art and rushing with the help of the other artists…like I said they were AWESOME….to cover my work and load the truck.  So although the ending was not one of fairy tales, our hearts are not changed.  We loved it and plan to do many many more.  And that’s what it’s all about anyway….the sales are nice but doing something that I love along side my husband….that you just can’t beat!!!

Almost Ready……in our own frugal way!

We worked and Spent our tails off getting ready for my first outdoor show.  Galleries are so nice and air-conditioned but I’ll have to admit I’m excited about the outdoor experience.  Just lots of water or Dr. Pepper and I’ll be fine. Along with my sweet hubby, you’ll see putting up lights below……also, I was nervous about our panels since we went the frugal way of course and just got closet shelving to hang at $10 a piece instead of MUCH MUCH more for pro-panel, but after putting them up with zip ties non the less, they disappear into the wall of the tent and all you see is my art.  Going cheap can pay off!!!!!    We also lucked out and found good track lighting at only $29 a set and my handy dandy husband hooked the lights up looking all professional.  Heck, It actually looks like we know what we’re doing!!!  Who Knew???  So  here’s a few peeks…..we’ll have the whole tent set up for practice next weekend.  Wow….I’ve never felt more at home…..

October 8th I’ll be at HandleyFest for One Day only…A short drive to Fort Worth! Come by and see me!

November 5-6 I’ll be in Winnsboro Texas for Winnsboro Fine Art Fest click above for the website with maps etc.   Only an hour and a half from DFW for a great day of art and fun. Come and stop by my tent!

Don’t forget to bring your coupon for 10% a purchase of $100 or more.

We’re still working on thrifty ways to do these shows and my amazing husband has built an incredible pegboard screen for me to hang goodies from and made these weights by hand using pvc pipe and concrete….I’m thinking my tent’s not going anywhere…we hope so at least! Here’s the website with full directions on making these weights.  Now did my husband follow these exact directions….NO of course not….he’s a man he doesn’t need instructions….but the weights turned out great anyway even without following the instructions….he cracks me up, but I couldn’t complain much.  He’s been my right hand man slash biggest fan in this entire journey from selling on the internet to selling at fairs so His support is enough to make any woman feel like a princess.  I’m extremely blessed!!  So here’s a pic of our weights and the link with instructions….

The pegboard wall is almost finished and will be in my next post.  I’m in love with it…..picture chinese folding screen in a pegboard that is completely collapsible for easy transport.  Who knew what a CPA coul do with his hands!!  Hope to see you there and soon, peace and light to you and yours, WK.

We Can’t Help It!!

Is she really adding stripes? YES!!! Why?  I don’t know!!…..Do you ever have a feeling as an artist or a buyer that you have no control over what you do as an artist or like as an art lover?  It’s just there or it’s not and you can’t explain why. When someone asks you as an art lover “What do you like”, I most often answer, “I’ll know it when I see it.”

So for all those art lovers out there who can’t “help” what they like….just a little secret….we artists can’t “help” what we paint!  I may not be speaking for all the artist’s of the world but when I’m in my studio it’s this bubble of feeling like you can’t make a mistake because every drop of paint or encaustic or paper or any medium you use to create your work WILL without your consent END UP EXACTLY WHERE IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE.  I feel possessed almost and my husband will ask me, What’s it going to look like?, What are you going for here?” and I can’t answer him most often except to say…”he*% if I know!”  I’m just along for the ride!

And the ride is so exhilarating that you can’t breathe sometimes and you step back to look at your work and you think “where the He*% did that come from” or “Did I do that?”  “I couldn’t possibly have done that, I’m not that talented”, but there it is on the canvas and I love it.  Not another soul on the planet may love it, but I do and it came from a place inside me from which I do not know and that alone creates a sacredness about the piece that makes it ok if someone else doesn’t like it.  They don’t have to. The process was sacred to me.

So here we are with my latest piece and my first outdoor show (I’m used to indoor comforts) in one month and this piece literally came from nowhere in a matter of days.  It is very similar to my familiar style but there where some moments here and there, like the stripes and some free-handed painting that just happened and felt so familiar that I wanted to share with you all.

Artists, let your muse do the work for you today and art lovers, love what you love without feeling it necessary to explain why.  We like what we like and it’s all for the same reason….WE CAN’T HELP LOVING IT AND WE CAN’T HELP PAINTING IT!

As always, love and light  WK

Back from Vacay and school starts soon!!!!

Well, we’re back from Vacay ………..and here’s a few more sketches from my journal during vacay time.  I focused on faces because I’ll admit they are a weakness for me but mostly because that’s how I want to start the year with my students.

I am sad when summer is over because the illusion that I am a “full time artist” is shattered and I’m reminded oh so vehemently that I do have another job to go to in order to pay the bills….I’m just very lucky that it’s TEACHING art and keeps me on my toes and allows me to keep working on my own projects in bits and pieces.   But still I so enjoy the “illusion” the summer creates and am always left perplexed, anxious and sad when it’s over.  Not because I don’t love my job and my amazing students, but it’s that constant reminder that I have yet to make it to where I can survive on my Art alone and that September Stab every year never dulls.  But I won’t let it bring me down because I have 250 students waiting to take ART and they WANT to be there…..unlike Math class….so I can’t and won’t let them down….I’ve done over thirty pieces this summer and now I have 250 “MASTERPieces” waiting for me all with a face and a name.  Let me serve them well.

My husband and I also made a valiant attempt at getting all my art off the floor and out of the garage so we got it all hung in my studio and ready for showtime in October.
