New piece Step by Step….Continued….

Well, the piece I started is coming along nicely.  I only wish I had more time to work on it.  I’m not sure it’ll be ready for my October Shows…..but I don’t want to rush it, so it may début in November and I’m fine with that….I’m loving the cool colors of blues and greens and purples and finding the different shades for the collage portion of the circles….I painted underneath and I love the color peaking up beneath the collage….this was such a flash of vision in my head that I’m very interested to see if it turns out in reality the way it flashed in my head!!!  So here’s what I’ve been doing….

In addition my students are in the process of recreating Starry Night on an extremely large canvas square by square with each student drawing a random square and recreating it on the canvas.  Below are the results as of now…I can’t wait to see the end.  They are SO talented!!

I look forward to comments……Don’t be afraid, let’s hear them!!!  Also, Don’t forget to visit me on Facebook and Like Hummingbird Studios Page and follow us on Twitter OR sign up for our newsletter to your right. New piece, step by step

I’ve started a new piece that came to me in my car while driving home from work…..as soon as I got home this was the sketch that quickly and messily came out of my head….

My favorite poem Annabelle Lee by Edgar Allen Poe came to mind and I knew it had to be the back ground so I began immediately …..

The text of the poem reads:

Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Edgar Allan Poe

As you can see it’s a chilling, sadly romantic story that revolves around the sea so I guess my themes of cool colors will continue!  I can’t wait to get those swirls and circles in there to go with my original messy sketch and I will keep you updated as I go!!

Please don’t forget how much I admire and love you all….your respect and opinion is valuable to me so As always, I look forward to comments……Don’t be afraid, let’s hear them!!!  Also, Don’t forget to visit me on Facebook and Like Hummingbird Studios Page and follow us on Twitter OR sign up for our newsletter to your right. Altering Vintage Canvases

I may have found a new fun passion…..

This is a new technique for me, I received an unfinished canvas from a friend of my mother’s and they said I could do anything with it….they didn’t know what they were asking. The dragonfly and florals were the only things on the canvas a…nd I put my touch on it with texture and my Cubists style along with vintage papers painted over with browns at the top and bottom, leaving only the florals and the dragonfly, adding some browns to connect them. This was the finished product, definitely different for me but honestly it makes me want to bombard garage sales and find canvas to alter and make my own!!!! It was too fun and I can’t wait to see what people think of this experiment……

And don’t forget to let me know what you think of this new fun experiment….and the idea of finding more unfinished pieces or even finished pieces at garage sales and thrift stores to finish or alter in my own way…..what are your thoughts?

As always, peace and light to you and yours….WK

Vintage papers and how I use them in my work….plus some great new finds at Home Depot!

Hello to you and happy Super Bowl Day!!

Yes it’s a holiday around our house!!

I finished a piece last night with some amazing vintage papers that I found at a toy train show of all places!  My husband is a huge toy train fan and I love to go and enjoy with him. Fortunate for me, always looking for vintage items, I lucked upon a vendor that was selling all kinds of maps, records and various train memorabilia for very inexpensive prices!  I found an entire accounting ledger full of handwriting dated in the 1950’s…..it’s amazing and to most people it’s just an old book that’s been written in, but the writing is my favorite part.  Imagine over 60 years ago an accountant and engineer for a train company diligently wrote down expenses and income, thinking it was a mere form of record for himself and his business…..I wonder what he would think now knowing it has become part of my art?  Would he think I’m crazy?  Would he be thrilled?  Wherever he or she is now, they are now a part of me and I find that so moving and the connection so powerful that I have a difficult time putting it into words…..Their energy is now a part of my work and find it a fascinating aspect of my job…if you can call it a job!!

Here’s the book and an example of a page….

                                Below is the piece I worked on using the first pages of this book, the earthy tones really give it that vintage feel that I wanted.  EVERY SINGLE Paint used in this piece is from my favorite place, let’s say it together…HOME DEPOT!  They are all textured or metallic samples of Martha Stewarts line of paints.  The metallics are amazing and the textures range from crackle paints to the dark brown which you would swear is gritty mud smeared on the canvas with a knife….I also used some texture tools I got at the train show as well, a metal bristled “toothbrush” meant to clean track, but makes great texture in molding paint etc.  So for around five dollars a piece you get some great new textures and colors in good sized bottles that last a long while.  So here is the piece with a close up of the pages out of the Train Log along with an image that reminded me of my grandmother…..

Follow Along Beveled Project Part II

Well, I’m sure everyone is  busy with Christmas and all the Holidays that come up around this time so Happy Holidays to all, no matter what you are celebrating.  So I’ve been slow in getting out the next step in this project but school is officially out now and I’m hoping the next two weeks will  involve sleeping and painting….ahhh, heaven.

So the next step in the beveled project is very easy and I’ll be on in the next day or so with the next step which is a blast and has become a staple of mine, but you’ll have to wait for that one.

Today we are adding ephemera of any kind with heavy gel paste.  I use dictionary pages, pictures, asian papers and basically anything I want to be seen underneath the paint.  I love text showing through so I use a lot of text.  You can use pictures or anything you like….

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

As you can see I’ve let the papers go over the side onto the beveled area and I’ve “collaged” the papers inside the original lines I drew keeping my original composition.

Like I said the next step is really fun, so stay tuned and until then grab all your fun pages and start tearing or cutting and collaging into your orignal sketched composition.  Have fun!!

So I’ll see you soon with the next step and as always, comment, share or like the post if you do indeed “like” it.  Don’t forget to visit Hummingbird Studios on Facebook and Like our page there.  I would love to keep up with you and be able to visit.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays….peace and light….WK

Beveled Canvas Project: Follow along!!

Well, I got these amazing new canvases that are beveled on the edges….they are so cool as you can see here….so I’m starting a new piece on a large one and I’m going to try to document it stage by stage for you.  The first pic is of the plain canvas.

The next pic is of some lines I’ve very loosely sketched in to create sections for different textures and colors.  I think I’m going to try to go with some brighter colors for this one just for fun.  I very much stick to warmer colors and maybe I’ll play around with some brights this time.  Below you’ll see the general layout and some heavy molding gel that I’ve put in various textures.

Finally the last picture is of the corner showing the texture going off the beveled side.

If you want to follow along you can use any canvas OR if you want these great beveled canvases check out Jerry’s Artorama for their very reasonable prices.  Or you can just use a regular canvas to follow along with the techniques I’ll be using.

So to recap

1.  Sketch out a general layout to section off your canvas into different squares and triangles, rectangles, anything you want really.  I stuck with squares and rectangles of various sizes for this piece.

2.  Use molding paste or a heavy bodied gel medium to cover various sections.   Then using different tools, stamps or even your hands give the paste texture.  Then leave to dry until we can begin again another day!

As always don’t forget to Like the post if you do indeed like it or share it with some friends on Facebook or Twitter or LEAVE A COMMENT with anything you’d like to add to this project.  I would love to hear what variations you would have on this project as we go.

Love and Light and Happy Holidays to you and yours.  WK

New Pieces and Winnsboro Art Fair…..How did it go?

Hi!!

Well we just returned from Winnsboro Fine Arts Festival where the artists were treated like kings and queens.  The sales weren’t the best but the atmosphere and hospitality couldn’t be beat!  We sold two pieces and had two galleries ask for pieces to be hung in their spaces with commissions but we have another show in two weeks and just didn’t have the inventory but it was quite the compliment!  I did a demo for the show which you can see below.  I’ve gotten so used to working in large spaces that working on a small canvas just about killed me so I had to carry it over to another canvas and now I’m on the third…so a simple demo turned into a series…..I’m never simple I guess.

I’ve also completed a new piece that I was able to show that really caught one of the judges eyes.  He said he loved it and it was his favorite….and yet I didn’t win any awards….I guess he was out-voted! 🙂  But I’m very happy with the piece and the new direction my work is taking with some new techniques I’ve found from extensive reading.  It’s really changing the way I work and I’m loving it.  I hope you do too.

New Work

New work

Well, the last pic is our booth and I hope this post has made you feel like you were there with us in Winnsboro even if you couldn’t make it to see us.  I hope to see you soon, we’re at the Peddler’s show in Arlington at the Arlington Convention Center November 18-20.  Hope to see you there!!

As always, Peace and Light, don’t forget to comment or contact me, tweet or facebook.  I would love to hear from you!
