Follow Along Beveled Project Part II

Well, I’m sure everyone is  busy with Christmas and all the Holidays that come up around this time so Happy Holidays to all, no matter what you are celebrating.  So I’ve been slow in getting out the next step in this project but school is officially out now and I’m hoping the next two weeks will  involve sleeping and painting….ahhh, heaven.

So the next step in the beveled project is very easy and I’ll be on in the next day or so with the next step which is a blast and has become a staple of mine, but you’ll have to wait for that one.

Today we are adding ephemera of any kind with heavy gel paste.  I use dictionary pages, pictures, asian papers and basically anything I want to be seen underneath the paint.  I love text showing through so I use a lot of text.  You can use pictures or anything you like….

As you can see I’ve let the papers go over the side onto the beveled area and I’ve “collaged” the papers inside the original lines I drew keeping my original composition.

Like I said the next step is really fun, so stay tuned and until then grab all your fun pages and start tearing or cutting and collaging into your orignal sketched composition.  Have fun!!

So I’ll see you soon with the next step and as always, comment, share or like the post if you do indeed “like” it.  Don’t forget to visit Hummingbird Studios on Facebook and Like our page there.  I would love to keep up with you and be able to visit.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays….peace and light….WK

What were you up to this weekend?

Hey you….what were you up to this weekend?  I was lucky enough to….

1.  get to drive up to Hot Springs Arkansas where my work will now be hanging in the Legacy Fine Art gallery.  They have a ton a ton of galleries and they do a gallery walk first Friday of every month, so the galleries get a lot of views especially during the holidays and race season.

 2.  Stay in a lovely hotel with a great discount from the gallery except the kicker was that is was almost 100 years old with everything

from an old fashioned see through mail drop to still using REAL KEYS!!!  Imagine that….but with the 100 year old atmosphere, no matter how fancy you cannot take the “creep” factor away….that place felt so haunted it wasn’t even funny!  If you don’t believe in that sort of thing that’s ok, but I got the creeps and the room wouldn’t warm up!!  Was it Room 1408 with John Cusack….no…but the creep factor was there not to mention clothes that were not folded the night before were folded when we woke up on the edge of the bed.   TRUE STORY…..At least the ghost was thoughtful.  🙂 They even had a walking haunted tour and I didn’t want to go on it for fear there would be the inevitable stop at our hotel.  But BOY was the hotel georgous and those Arkansas people know how to party, keep late hours and they LOVE Halloween. Which might have something to do with the ghost in our room!! 🙂  They have the greatest shops, bath spas and yes I partook of both shopping (more than my husband would have liked) and the bath spas with the healing waters from the hot springs.   So besides the creepy haunted room with a thoughtful ghost, it was AMAZING.  If you haven’t visited Hot Springs…. GO and GO NOW…and take a stop at Legacy Art Gallery to peruse my work.  See the hotel and our haunted room along with the beautiful scenery,( who knew leaves had colors other than brown and green??) see below…..

3.  I finished another piece today, my biggest to date at 56″x56″….I had such fun with it and can’t wait to get it online.  I used lot’s of old techniques and some new ones.  Much fun was had and I hope it shows when you look at it.

Ok you, that’s what I did this weekend, comment and tell me about yours!!!!  And don’t forget I’ll be at Winnsboro Art Festival this weekend!!!  Hope to see you there.  Peace and light as always….WK

New art work that my husband hates….

Well, I just tried a new art technique from the following book which is amazing, you should give it a read!!  The book is by Mary Beth Shaw.  Click the picture below to order.

However the technique I used was by Misty Mawn and I fell in love with it.  Check out her link!  She’s amazing!  So here is the result of my attempt at one of her tutorials.  I loved it, My hubby, not so much.  It’s two panels put together to create one full image.  I was very happy with it, but I LOVE that my husband can be so honest with me.  We have VERY different taste in art so I’m going to show it regardless of his review, but I’m interested in YOUR review…shoot some comments at me and let me know what you think.  It’s different from my normal style but I’m branching out and would love to hear from you.  I can handle some constructive criticism! So I would LOVE to hear your comments below!!

Don’t forget to LIKE me on Facebook, DIGG  and check out Misty Mawn & Mary Beth Shaw  They are worth your time believe me!!

Something New….Where did this come from?

Well, this is my latest work and it’s got a different flow about it that my previous pieces, but I did it in one day all day couldn’t stop and then just “There it was”…..certainly softer and more blending, maybe all this portrait work at school and blending is rubbing off on my other pieces.  Can’t wait to see where it takes me next!!!

Let me know how you feel about this evolution as it takes place!  You’re the only way I get out of my head for critiques….any comments good or bad always welcome.   Don’t forget to Like or visit Facebook at Windy Kai: Hummingbird Studios….all those Social Media things…..love and light to you and yours….WK

Where will I be in the next month in person and another thrifty way I’m getting there thanks to my biggest fan…my hubby!

Click for my info under 2011 Artists! Nov 5-6

October 8th I’ll be at HandleyFest for One Day only…A short drive to Fort Worth! Come by and see me!

November 5-6 I’ll be in Winnsboro Texas for Winnsboro Fine Art Fest click above for the website with maps etc.   Only an hour and a half from DFW for a great day of art and fun. Come and stop by my tent!

Don’t forget to bring your coupon for 10% a purchase of $100 or more.

We’re still working on thrifty ways to do these shows and my amazing husband has built an incredible pegboard screen for me to hang goodies from and made these weights by hand using pvc pipe and concrete….I’m thinking my tent’s not going anywhere…we hope so at least! Here’s the website with full directions on making these weights.  Now did my husband follow these exact directions….NO of course not….he’s a man he doesn’t need instructions….but the weights turned out great anyway even without following the instructions….he cracks me up, but I couldn’t complain much.  He’s been my right hand man slash biggest fan in this entire journey from selling on the internet to selling at fairs so His support is enough to make any woman feel like a princess.  I’m extremely blessed!!  So here’s a pic of our weights and the link with instructions….

The pegboard wall is almost finished and will be in my next post.  I’m in love with it…..picture chinese folding screen in a pegboard that is completely collapsible for easy transport.  Who knew what a CPA coul do with his hands!!  Hope to see you there and soon, peace and light to you and yours, WK.

We Can’t Help It!!

Is she really adding stripes? YES!!! Why?  I don’t know!!…..Do you ever have a feeling as an artist or a buyer that you have no control over what you do as an artist or like as an art lover?  It’s just there or it’s not and you can’t explain why. When someone asks you as an art lover “What do you like”, I most often answer, “I’ll know it when I see it.”

So for all those art lovers out there who can’t “help” what they like….just a little secret….we artists can’t “help” what we paint!  I may not be speaking for all the artist’s of the world but when I’m in my studio it’s this bubble of feeling like you can’t make a mistake because every drop of paint or encaustic or paper or any medium you use to create your work WILL without your consent END UP EXACTLY WHERE IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE.  I feel possessed almost and my husband will ask me, What’s it going to look like?, What are you going for here?” and I can’t answer him most often except to say…”he*% if I know!”  I’m just along for the ride!

And the ride is so exhilarating that you can’t breathe sometimes and you step back to look at your work and you think “where the He*% did that come from” or “Did I do that?”  “I couldn’t possibly have done that, I’m not that talented”, but there it is on the canvas and I love it.  Not another soul on the planet may love it, but I do and it came from a place inside me from which I do not know and that alone creates a sacredness about the piece that makes it ok if someone else doesn’t like it.  They don’t have to. The process was sacred to me.

So here we are with my latest piece and my first outdoor show (I’m used to indoor comforts) in one month and this piece literally came from nowhere in a matter of days.  It is very similar to my familiar style but there where some moments here and there, like the stripes and some free-handed painting that just happened and felt so familiar that I wanted to share with you all.

Artists, let your muse do the work for you today and art lovers, love what you love without feeling it necessary to explain why.  We like what we like and it’s all for the same reason….WE CAN’T HELP LOVING IT AND WE CAN’T HELP PAINTING IT!

As always, love and light  WK
