Am I on a mixed media roll or in a rut?

If you’ve been following I’ve put out about five new pieces with a similar technique and I’m loving doing them.  My question is, am I on a roll or in a rut?  With each piece I play with color and various textures even adding herbs to my paints, which I LOVE!!!  But they all have a similar feel, I guess a collection you could say so when does it cease to be a “roll” and become a “rut”…..

Here’s my newest piece…..and I’m really enjoying the cohesive nature of my new collection but again I don’t want to get into a rut….although I’ve seen artists make millions doing the same thing over and over in slightly different ways, so which is it?  Roll or Rut???

Something New….Where did this come from?

Well, this is my latest work and it’s got a different flow about it that my previous pieces, but I did it in one day all day couldn’t stop and then just “There it was”…..certainly softer and more blending, maybe all this portrait work at school and blending is rubbing off on my other pieces.  Can’t wait to see where it takes me next!!!

Let me know how you feel about this evolution as it takes place!  You’re the only way I get out of my head for critiques….any comments good or bad always welcome.   Don’t forget to Like or visit Facebook at Windy Kai: Hummingbird Studios….all those Social Media things…..love and light to you and yours….WK

What my kids added to my work!!

Last post I showed you two pieces I did for our school walls.  I gave this challenge to a group of my 8th graders and look what that had to come back at me with!!  They are so good!!  This will make a nice installation and I can’t wait to see the other smaller installation they are working on.

First two panels I made….

Panels my students have added!! The two brown and one red are theirs and the white mine….

I think they might be showing me up!!  I’m so proud of them.  These installations have a lot of promise. And it comes from 13 and 14 year olds.  A great reminder of why I teach and don’t just work as a solitary artist.

Using the same technique with different mediums….what in the world will happen?

I’ve fallen so in love with Encaustic lately but I still love my acrylic technique so much, so I’m just going for it and playing around….remember to always just play and have fun!! so here I am playing around with using the exact same taping and collaging techniques except using encaustic instead of acrylic.  If you look at a lot of my shape based pieces you’ll see I”ll focus on either triangles, squares or rectangles….well with this encaustic piece I not only set aside the acrylic but used both squares and triangles….How DARE I????   🙂  But it was so so fun….so here is the result, let me know what you think and  leave a comment or “Like” it or just look at it and say “what the heck was she thinking”…..but just have a look ….. that’s all we should care about is putting what the muses give us on the substrate given us, whether it’s canvas, wood or notebook paper, then let others do what they will with it….(but I do love my comments I must say!!! 🙂  Peace and Light to you my friend.  WK

What happens when schools out for summer?

You  get a LOT of work done….this is a piece I was working on before my sunset inspired me and I finally got it done tonight.  I expanded on my cubist theme and added some beading which you see in the close ups. I love my beads…my husband hates them!!!  I also added foam board to create two different layers on the board.  By the way my husband also hated this….have I mentioned my husband has terrible taste in art!!!  Seriously I love to hear his input because it’s so different from mine and he keeps me grounded.  So below is the result of my next cubist inspired piece to add to my collection.  I’m really obsessed with this but it’s also nice to be creating a nice cohesive body of work considering how ADD I usually am….but don’t forget Windy you’re also playing around with encaustic on the side…so the  ADD isn’t completely gone and probably never will be!

New Work: Moving Along

I’m not used to working on multi-level surfaces….But I’m loving the foamboard on the wood….it’s too fun….

Here are the same holes but painted….the bead and wiring will come last….

Holes to be wired and beaded

So in the last week we’ve gone from this to this…….Gotta long way to go so back to the studio….

New Work: First Stages

Happy Sunday to you!  Well, I got ahold of some foam board which I just loved and decided on this next triangular piece I was going to build up some sections.  Then I thought, well I have all these wire pieces as well, wire not incorporate just a tad of wire work into my cubist pieces as well to soften them up….so here’s the beginnings…the VERY beginnings of this piece….

Well, and not  to mention a previous piece I expoxied that looks amazing with the layer of envirotex on it…is taking a life-time to dry!  It’s been a week and it’s still tacky to the touch….anyone with expoxy tips let me know!  I’m open to all suggestions.  I love the look, and granted it’s a thick layer because that’s what I’m going for, but I’ll have to paint something years in advance at this rate to show or sell!! 🙂
