Setting a piece aside and leaving it to the muses!

Well, I’ve been working on a piece for quite some time now and it just isn’t happening.  The whole composition bothers me, the colors, the shapes, the lines, the textures, basically ALL your Elements and Principles of ART!! Hah,  So I’ve decided to set it aside and put it in the hands of my muses and begin another piece.   Here’s what’s not working for me….

So now it’s on the floor with some pastels awaiting my attention when the mood strikes.

BUT, we just got back from a cruise and blues and golds are just running through my head like mad, so I’ve begun the following piece.

I’ve LOVING the golds and blues….the texture of the molding paste, the composition which in my head is filled in with all kinds of blues including collage, pastel, paints with herbs etc.  I feel very inspired by this piece and I hope it will help to get me over the hump of the other piece!

SOOOO, the question to you today is, have you ever been stuck on a piece?  We ALL know the answer is YES for all of us…so I would love to hear about it in the comments section or on my Facebook page….. pictures would be even better!!!  I’d love to be reminded I’m not alone in this!

I look forward to comments……Don’t be afraid, let’s hear them!!!  Also, Don’t forget to visit me on Facebook and Like Hummingbird Studios Page and follow us on Twitter OR sign up for our newsletter to your right. My New Diggs

Well, for awhile now I’ve struggled with an EZ up tent, well several of them as they kept breaking) and mooning over and over about how lovely pro-panels looked and my CPA ie my husband…..asured me that simply couldn’t take the “Plunge” to buy ALL new equipment, let alone top of the line items like Flourish TrimLine Tents or anough Pro-Panels to fill my tent.  You see up until now I had prided myself on being the frugal art insider….and believe me I won’t dissapoint you.  This was a gift from a Greater Source…My God is taking care of me!

After looking online at ArtInsiders.com,( if you haven’t discovered this site, go directly to it!! after you  finish reading my post  🙂 ) I found plenty of tents for sale or panels for sale but shipping would kill us…so my brilliant husband said check Craig’s list, that’s local.  I told him I had already checked many times.  His response…”Check again.”

And to our surprise in our own city we found not only a tent, not only the panels but BOTH for literally less than a third of what they would cost new….and no they were not beat up and used even five times, NO…ONCE!!!!!

So although I have the newest toys, I will still be the frugal queen….in fact this is my biggest frugal aquisition of all!!!

Collaborative Work With a Friend

A friend and I got together to do this work, sketching, she did the wood burning and I stained and painted it…..we felt a real iconic, fairy tale look to it….we had fun and did it in about thirty minutes so we can’t wait to play together some more and see what happens!!!  Collaboration can be a great thing!  She even left me her wood burner to play with….now THAT’S Dangerous!!

We also did this dragon and tiger……

Some VERY different work for me, but too much fun!!!!  I may be playing around with that wood burner alot, God bless my husband!!

New Work….Abstract Circles

Good Morning!

I’ve included today my last piece before my show on the 23rd….(don’t forget to visit me on the 23rd-25th at Art on the Greene in Arlington!)  and I’m very happy with the turn out, especially the colors….Would love to hear your feedback, good or critical….

I’m doing some experimenting with some less structured abstract as well….it’s such foreign territory to me that I feel exhilaration at the process but terrified as well….any feed back would be truly appreciated as I take this new road…..I love this style and can’t wait to dive in….painting really is such a perpetual playground….I know you feel the same about your art.  It just doesn’t get any better than getting to “play”for a living!!

I look forward to your comments and Don’t forget to visit me on Facebook and Like Hummingbird Studios Page and follow us on Twitter OR sign up for our newsletter to your right.  Peace and Light and I hope to see you in Arlington on the 23rd-25th!  WS

Vintage papers and how I use them in my work….plus some great new finds at Home Depot!

Hello to you and happy Super Bowl Day!!

Yes it’s a holiday around our house!!

I finished a piece last night with some amazing vintage papers that I found at a toy train show of all places!  My husband is a huge toy train fan and I love to go and enjoy with him. Fortunate for me, always looking for vintage items, I lucked upon a vendor that was selling all kinds of maps, records and various train memorabilia for very inexpensive prices!  I found an entire accounting ledger full of handwriting dated in the 1950’s…..it’s amazing and to most people it’s just an old book that’s been written in, but the writing is my favorite part.  Imagine over 60 years ago an accountant and engineer for a train company diligently wrote down expenses and income, thinking it was a mere form of record for himself and his business…..I wonder what he would think now knowing it has become part of my art?  Would he think I’m crazy?  Would he be thrilled?  Wherever he or she is now, they are now a part of me and I find that so moving and the connection so powerful that I have a difficult time putting it into words…..Their energy is now a part of my work and find it a fascinating aspect of my job…if you can call it a job!!

Here’s the book and an example of a page….

Below is the piece I worked on using the first pages of this book, the earthy tones really give it that vintage feel that I wanted.  EVERY SINGLE Paint used in this piece is from my favorite place, let’s say it together…HOME DEPOT!  They are all textured or metallic samples of Martha Stewarts line of paints.  The metallics are amazing and the textures range from crackle paints to the dark brown which you would swear is gritty mud smeared on the canvas with a knife….I also used some texture tools I got at the train show as well, a metal bristled “toothbrush” meant to clean track, but makes great texture in molding paint etc.  So for around five dollars a piece you get some great new textures and colors in good sized bottles that last a long while.  So here is the piece with a close up of the pages out of the Train Log along with an image that reminded me of my grandmother…..

Browns and Blues won’t leave me alone!

Here’s a look at my newest piece.   I’m in love with browns always but now  browns and  blues can’t stay away from each other in my work.  They are like magnets.  So here’s my latest piece on my easel.  In this picture the different tones of browns and yellows I used didn’t show up as well as I would have liked so I will get an updated pic up soon.  I ranged from dark browns to light tan colors  but the pic on my iPhone didn’t quite catch it so I’m off to capture it with my “real” camera.  Who knew there was something an iPhone couldn’t do??? 🙂

Do you have colors that you “magnet” towards?  Colors that call to you?   Please share in the comment section if you do!

Here’s a better pic of the above painting that really captures the tonal values of the browns used.

Final Post for Beveled Art Tutorial….Completed Piece

Hey you!  For the final step in this project you’ll need black pastels such as these….

This is the easiest part of the process but also just brings the whole piece together.  You’ll take your black pastel and outline each block fairly thickly.  Then taking a clean dry brush you’ll blend in the black pastel with up and down movements until fully blended.  See Below

Here are some finished shots of the outlined blocks…..

And the Final Product is Below along with a cropped version that I’ll use for prints.

I truly hoped you’ve enjoyed this tutorial and even if you don’t follow step by step, hopefully you’ve gotten some techniques that piqued your interest.  Again I would love to see pictures.   Don’t forget to visit me on Facebook and Like Hummingbird Studios Page and follow us on Twitter OR sign up for our newsletter to your right.  You’ll get a free transfer technique and Monthly updates  and tutorials from Hummingbird Studios.   As Always Peace and Light from Hummingbird Studios and a Happy New Year!
