New piece, step by step

I’ve started a new piece that came to me in my car while driving home from work…..as soon as I got home this was the sketch that quickly and messily came out of my head….

My favorite poem Annabelle Lee by Edgar Allen Poe came to mind and I knew it had to be the back ground so I began immediately …..

The text of the poem reads:

Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Edgar Allan Poe

As you can see it’s a chilling, sadly romantic story that revolves around the sea so I guess my themes of cool colors will continue!  I can’t wait to get those swirls and circles in there to go with my original messy sketch and I will keep you updated as I go!!

Setting a piece aside and leaving it to the muses!

Well, I’ve been working on a piece for quite some time now and it just isn’t happening.  The whole composition bothers me, the colors, the shapes, the lines, the textures, basically ALL your Elements and Principles of ART!! Hah,  So I’ve decided to set it aside and put it in the hands of my muses and begin another piece.   Here’s what’s not working for me….

So now it’s on the floor with some pastels awaiting my attention when the mood strikes.

BUT, we just got back from a cruise and blues and golds are just running through my head like mad, so I’ve begun the following piece.

I’ve LOVING the golds and blues….the texture of the molding paste, the composition which in my head is filled in with all kinds of blues including collage, pastel, paints with herbs etc.  I feel very inspired by this piece and I hope it will help to get me over the hump of the other piece!

SOOOO, the question to you today is, have you ever been stuck on a piece?  We ALL know the answer is YES for all of us…so I would love to hear about it in the comments section or on my Facebook page….. pictures would be even better!!!  I’d love to be reminded I’m not alone in this!

I look forward to comments……Don’t be afraid, let’s hear them!!!  Also, Don’t forget to visit me on Facebook and Like Hummingbird Studios Page and follow us on Twitter OR sign up for our newsletter to your right. Summer is almost here and sorry for the lack of posts of late

Hi all,

As you know I teach Art to teens as well as work in my studio.  Well, the month of May in a school is an entity in and of itself and has left little studio time.  Along with a few shows, and a graduating Senior (sniff, sniff)  I’ve had little time to blog.  Please forgive me and know that I haven’t run out of things to say….my husband can attest to that!…..so in two weeks when school is out I’ll be back on line for good.  Until then, very soon, I’ll have a little video of some amazing altered book work my students have done and some of my work that I’ve been doing along with them.

So since I’VE been out of commission I would LOVE to hear what YOU have been up to!  Comment below, leave a link or picture and let us know what you’ve been creating.  I would love some inspiration as I enter back into my newly revamped studio….yes I went in to just clean up and my CPA husband followed me leading to a totally revamped more “efficient” 🙂 studio!!!  Gotta love having a total left brain and total right brain in one household!

So PLEASE comment and let me see what you’ve been up to.  I can’t wait to see all the creativity that’s been going on during my haitus!

As always….Light and Love WK

New Work….Abstract Circles

Good Morning!

I’ve included today my last piece before my show on the 23rd….(don’t forget to visit me on the 23rd-25th at Art on the Greene in Arlington!)  and I’m very happy with the turn out, especially the colors….Would love to hear your feedback, good or critical….

I’m doing some experimenting with some less structured abstract as well….it’s such foreign territory to me that I feel exhilaration at the process but terrified as well….any feed back would be truly appreciated as I take this new road…..I love this style and can’t wait to dive in….painting really is such a perpetual playground….I know you feel the same about your art.  It just doesn’t get any better than getting to “play”for a living!!

I look forward to your comments and Don’t forget to visit me on Facebook and Like Hummingbird Studios Page and follow us on Twitter OR sign up for our newsletter to your right.  Peace and Light and I hope to see you in Arlington on the 23rd-25th!  WS

New Piece Dedicated to a New Life

One of my dearest friends just gave birth to a beautiful baby boy and the piece I just finished is dedicated to him and the new life ahead of him.  I look at the piece and see it as if I were an infant lying in a crib and looking up at the bobbles we often hang above a crib for the amusement of the baby and I see bobbles and light and color and oh, the world waiting for him to discover, so this piece, Circular Collage, is dedicated to you little one!!…Love Aunt Windy

Blessings and Light to my dear friends and their new family!!

Am I on a mixed media roll or in a rut?

If you’ve been following I’ve put out about five new pieces with a similar technique and I’m loving doing them.  My question is, am I on a roll or in a rut?  With each piece I play with color and various textures even adding herbs to my paints, which I LOVE!!!  But they all have a similar feel, I guess a collection you could say so when does it cease to be a “roll” and become a “rut”…..

Here’s my newest piece…..and I’m really enjoying the cohesive nature of my new collection but again I don’t want to get into a rut….although I’ve seen artists make millions doing the same thing over and over in slightly different ways, so which is it?  Roll or Rut???
