New art work that my husband hates….

Well, I just tried a new art technique from the following book which is amazing, you should give it a read!!  The book is by Mary Beth Shaw.  Click the picture below to order.

However the technique I used was by Misty Mawn and I fell in love with it.  Check out her link!  She’s amazing!  So here is the result of my attempt at one of her tutorials.  I loved it, My hubby, not so much.  It’s two panels put together to create one full image.  I was very happy with it, but I LOVE that my husband can be so honest with me.  We have VERY different taste in art so I’m going to show it regardless of his review, but I’m interested in YOUR review…shoot some comments at me and let me know what you think.  It’s different from my normal style but I’m branching out and would love to hear from you.  I can handle some constructive criticism! So I would LOVE to hear your comments below!!

Don’t forget to LIKE me on Facebook, DIGG  and check out Misty Mawn & Mary Beth Shaw  They are worth your time believe me!!

First Outdoor Art Show

Well our first outdoor show and it was a great experience overall….the 50,000 crowd they promised was more like 5000 and I only sold three prints, but the guy next to me said he’s been doing this 25 years and it just wasn’t a good show.  He only sold one hand bag and a dress (to me!!)  All the artists were AMAZING, the setup was intense but the day was lovely and my husband and I truly enjoyed ourselves and thought….we could do this for the rest of our lives…but the end of the evening came with the first rain TX has seen in MONTHS leaving us rapidly pulling down the tent and art and rushing with the help of the other artists…like I said they were AWESOME….to cover my work and load the truck.  So although the ending was not one of fairy tales, our hearts are not changed.  We loved it and plan to do many many more.  And that’s what it’s all about anyway….the sales are nice but doing something that I love along side my husband….that you just can’t beat!!!

Something New….Where did this come from?

Well, this is my latest work and it’s got a different flow about it that my previous pieces, but I did it in one day all day couldn’t stop and then just “There it was”…..certainly softer and more blending, maybe all this portrait work at school and blending is rubbing off on my other pieces.  Can’t wait to see where it takes me next!!!

Let me know how you feel about this evolution as it takes place!  You’re the only way I get out of my head for critiques….any comments good or bad always welcome.   Don’t forget to Like or visit Facebook at Windy Kai: Hummingbird Studios….all those Social Media things…..love and light to you and yours….WK

We Can’t Help It!!

Is she really adding stripes? YES!!! Why?  I don’t know!!…..Do you ever have a feeling as an artist or a buyer that you have no control over what you do as an artist or like as an art lover?  It’s just there or it’s not and you can’t explain why. When someone asks you as an art lover “What do you like”, I most often answer, “I’ll know it when I see it.”

So for all those art lovers out there who can’t “help” what they like….just a little secret….we artists can’t “help” what we paint!  I may not be speaking for all the artist’s of the world but when I’m in my studio it’s this bubble of feeling like you can’t make a mistake because every drop of paint or encaustic or paper or any medium you use to create your work WILL without your consent END UP EXACTLY WHERE IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE.  I feel possessed almost and my husband will ask me, What’s it going to look like?, What are you going for here?” and I can’t answer him most often except to say…”he*% if I know!”  I’m just along for the ride!

And the ride is so exhilarating that you can’t breathe sometimes and you step back to look at your work and you think “where the He*% did that come from” or “Did I do that?”  “I couldn’t possibly have done that, I’m not that talented”, but there it is on the canvas and I love it.  Not another soul on the planet may love it, but I do and it came from a place inside me from which I do not know and that alone creates a sacredness about the piece that makes it ok if someone else doesn’t like it.  They don’t have to. The process was sacred to me.

So here we are with my latest piece and my first outdoor show (I’m used to indoor comforts) in one month and this piece literally came from nowhere in a matter of days.  It is very similar to my familiar style but there where some moments here and there, like the stripes and some free-handed painting that just happened and felt so familiar that I wanted to share with you all.

Artists, let your muse do the work for you today and art lovers, love what you love without feeling it necessary to explain why.  We like what we like and it’s all for the same reason….WE CAN’T HELP LOVING IT AND WE CAN’T HELP PAINTING IT!

As always, love and light  WK

How will my students finish what I’ve begun?

Well, my students have been asked to create two installations for our school!  Given Two large bundles of canvas, Thanks you to our Principal, as we study Shape, one of the Elements of Art, we decide to collage shapes.  You know I’m all about the frugal way to create and these collages are made simply using vintage papers and magazine pages, along with some acrylic paints and paint markers!!!  One installation will be in triangles and the other in rectangles and squares.  We’re using white as I’ve shown below as an example, then reds and browns and greens with the rest  of the canvases.  I can’t WAIT to see what my talented students do to finish what I’ve started!  Stay tuned for the final project.  In  the mean time, these will be made available as prints on Red Bubble and Artspan….  I’ve already had one client inquire as to a purchase, although the orignals are already spoken for and were meant to be hung in the school, they are now asking for prints.  Check out Red Bubble or ArtSpan by clicking the images Below and it will lead you to the opportunity to buy prints….who knows, when the kid’s work is done….. it might be even better!!!

As Always I Hope all is well with you and I’m sending Love and Light and frugal ways to create….Windy Kai
