New Piece: “Flavor for Mixed Media”

Well, this is just a fun piece I did trying something new out of a book called “Flavor for Mixed Media” by Mary Betyh Shaw.  It was too much fun and has inspired me to add my own style to it…I can’t wait to play around with it more…check out the book…it’s too much fun!She Steps

New piece Step by Step….Continued….

Well, the piece I started is coming along nicely.  I only wish I had more time to work on it.  I’m not sure it’ll be ready for my October Shows…..but I don’t want to rush it, so it may début in November and I’m fine with that….I’m loving the cool colors of blues and greens and purples and finding the different shades for the collage portion of the circles….I painted underneath and I love the color peaking up beneath the collage….this was such a flash of vision in my head that I’m very interested to see if it turns out in reality the way it flashed in my head!!!  So here’s what I’ve been doing….

In addition my students are in the process of recreating Starry Night on an extremely large canvas square by square with each student drawing a random square and recreating it on the canvas.  Below are the results as of now…I can’t wait to see the end.  They are SO talented!!

I look forward to comments……Don’t be afraid, let’s hear them!!!  Also, Don’t forget to visit me on Facebook and Like Hummingbird Studios Page and follow us on Twitter OR sign up for our newsletter to your right. New piece, step by step

I’ve started a new piece that came to me in my car while driving home from work…..as soon as I got home this was the sketch that quickly and messily came out of my head….

My favorite poem Annabelle Lee by Edgar Allen Poe came to mind and I knew it had to be the back ground so I began immediately …..

The text of the poem reads:

Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Edgar Allan Poe

As you can see it’s a chilling, sadly romantic story that revolves around the sea so I guess my themes of cool colors will continue!  I can’t wait to get those swirls and circles in there to go with my original messy sketch and I will keep you updated as I go!!

Please don’t forget how much I admire and love you all….your respect and opinion is valuable to me so As always, I look forward to comments……Don’t be afraid, let’s hear them!!!  Also, Don’t forget to visit me on Facebook and Like Hummingbird Studios Page and follow us on Twitter OR sign up for our newsletter to your right. New Work….Abstract Circles

Good Morning!

I’ve included today my last piece before my show on the 23rd….(don’t forget to visit me on the 23rd-25th at Art on the Greene in Arlington!)  and I’m very happy with the turn out, especially the colors….Would love to hear your feedback, good or critical….

I’m doing some experimenting with some less structured abstract as well….it’s such foreign territory to me that I feel exhilaration at the process but terrified as well….any feed back would be truly appreciated as I take this new road…..I love this style and can’t wait to dive in….painting really is such a perpetual playground….I know you feel the same about your art.  It just doesn’t get any better than getting to “play”for a living!!

I look forward to your comments and Don’t forget to visit me on Facebook and Like Hummingbird Studios Page and follow us on Twitter OR sign up for our newsletter to your right. New Piece Dedicated to a New Life

One of my dearest friends just gave birth to a beautiful baby boy and the piece I just finished is dedicated to him and the new life ahead of him.  I look at the piece and see it as if I were an infant lying in a crib and looking up at the bobbles we often hang above a crib for the amusement of the baby and I see bobbles and light and color and oh, the world waiting for him to discover, so this piece, Circular Collage, is dedicated to you little one!!…Love Aunt Windy

Blessings and Light to my dear friends and their new family!!

Am I on a mixed media roll or in a rut?

If you’ve been following I’ve put out about five new pieces with a similar technique and I’m loving doing them.  My question is, am I on a roll or in a rut?  With each piece I play with color and various textures even adding herbs to my paints, which I LOVE!!!  But they all have a similar feel, I guess a collection you could say so when does it cease to be a “roll” and become a “rut”…..

Here’s my newest piece…..and I’m really enjoying the cohesive nature of my new collection but again I don’t want to get into a rut….although I’ve seen artists make millions doing the same thing over and over in slightly different ways, so which is it?  Roll or Rut???

Browns and Blues won’t leave me alone!

Here’s a look at my newest piece.   I’m in love with browns always but now  browns and  blues can’t stay away from each other in my work.  They are like magnets.  So here’s my latest piece on my easel.  In this picture the different tones of browns and yellows I used didn’t show up as well as I would have liked so I will get an updated pic up soon.  I ranged from dark browns to light tan colors  but the pic on my iPhone didn’t quite catch it so I’m off to capture it with my “real” camera.  Who knew there was something an iPhone couldn’t do??? 🙂

Do you have colors that you “magnet” towards?  Colors that call to you?   Please share in the comment section if you do!

Here’s a better pic of the above painting that really captures the tonal values of the browns used.
